Description: MHMIC have been traditionally manufactured using lithographic techniques. These involve use of several chemicals and wet processing. Some manufacturers (Polygrames Research Center, for example) have also used lasers to fabricate MHMICs, through a direct write process that does not have a high throughput. We are exploring the use of excimer laser through mask projection techniques for fabrication of thin film MHMICs. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to keep the size of the ablated region close to the design and to obtain clean ablation at the edges. Printing (by removal of metal film) of passive elements is, thus, possible by using excimer laser.
