M.Tech. Admission
M.Tech. admission will be offered based on the merit list prepared using a valid GATE score. There will be no written test and interviews. The eligibility criteria are available here. For admission in various streams, the candidate must possess (i) a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or any of the eligible branches of engineering and (ii) a valid GATE score in any of the eligible GATE paper codes, as listed in Table 1:

M.Tech. Admission to industry-sponsored candidates: The requirement for a valid GATE score is waived, while other eligibility criteria remain the same. A minimum of two years of experience is needed at the time of admission, along with an NOC from the present employer.

M.S.(R) Admission
Institute-sponsored M.S.(R): Admission will be offered based on the merit list prepared using a valid GATE score. The eligibility criteria are available here. For admission in various streams, the candidate must possess (i) a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or any of the eligible branches of engineering and (ii) a valid GATE score in any of the eligible GATE paper codes, as listed in Table 1.
Project-sponsored M.S.(R): A list of all available project positions from Mechanical Engineering faculty will be floated here tentatively by the end of April, 2024. Interested MS(R) candidates who are willing to be considered for project-sponsored MS(R) may provide their preferences. Also, candidates presently working as project staff for at least one year at IITK are eligible for project-sponsored MS(R) admission.
M.S.(R) Admission to industry-sponsored candidates: The requirement for a valid GATE score is waived, while other eligibility criteria remain the same. A minimum of two years of experience is needed at the time of admission, along with an NOC from the present employer.
PhD Admission

Beside the regular Ph.D. program, we also offer admission in the direct Ph.D. program to eligible candidates having (i) B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering and other eligible branches of engineering and (ii) a valid GATE score as listed in Table 1. The requirement for a GATE score is waived for candidates with a B.Tech. degree from a centrally funded technical institution (CFTI) having a CGPA of 7.5 and above.
Admission will be through a written test and interview . A candidate is required to attempt Mathematics and Basic English (compulsory for all) and any one of the following four streams (Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, Manufacturing Sciences, Robotics and Automation and Solid Mechanics and Design). Written test for Ph.D. admission
Ph.D. applicants are required to appear for an online written examination using CodeTantra platform.
Date of written tests: 28 April 2024, 10:00 AM – 12:15 AM. Please join at least 30 minutes before the start time.
The test will comprise compulsory sections on Applied Mathematics (60 min), Basic English (15 min), and another section based on your first choice of the stream (60 min) that you indicated at the time of application:

Technical Interviews for Ph.D. admission
All candidates shortlisted after the written test must appear for online or offline interviews. Candidates will be asked about their choice between online and offline interviews. The schedule for interviews is as follows:
Online interviews: 4 May 2024 (9 AM onward)
Offline interviews: 6 May 2024 (9 AM onward)
Candidates appearing for offline interviews have to remain available for the entire day. Please note that the interview will be technical. Questions will be broad-based and in the specialization indicated in your application.

Documents needed
For admission, we require your certificates, mark sheets, and project reports for the bachelor’s and master’s (if any) degrees. Kindly email the following documents (if not already uploaded with the application), in support of your application, to the Convener DPGC, ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) on or before April 22, 2024 (mention your application number in the subject of the email):
- Scanned copies of certificates and mark sheet of the Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degrees (if any)
- GATE score card. Students with only Bachelor's Degree in Engineering must submit an original GATE scorecard (exempted for Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from CFTI's).
- Scanned copy of certificate supporting your category, if you belong to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, or PH category
- No objection certificate for candidates who are presently employed
- Sponsorship certificate from your parent institute/organization if you have applied under the sponsored scheme
In addition to the above documents, Ph.D. applicants must also email:
- Statement of research (1-2 Pages)
- Abstract of Master’s thesis/bachelor project (not more than 1 page)
- GATE scorecard (if any)
- Two reference letters (Email will be sent to the referees that you have submitted in your application for submitting a recommendation online. Please inform the referees to check their email, including junk/spam folders. We do not accept recommendation in email or submitted physically by the candidate)
TA reimbursement: For Ph.D. admissions (where an interview is a must), the to-and-fro second class or sleeper class railway fare or ordinary bus fare will be reimbursed to all SC/ST/PwD candidates who will be appearing for the test/interview in person. The candidates will have to produce tickets to obtain reimbursement.
