The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or any of the other additional eligible branches for admission to respective streams of the department, as noted below in **Note) with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have the required qualification are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI. A valid GATE score is needed (Candidates applying to a particular stream, must have a valid GATE score in ME or other eligible branches of engineering, as noted below in **Note). The GATE requirement is waived for the B. Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B. Tech. However, such students are not entitled to Institute Assistantship if overall CPI is below 8.0.
** Note: The minimum qualification for admission to the M.Tech. program in different streams is a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or in any of the following branches for different streams of the department (GATE scores are required in any of the respective eligible branches only, as per the specific stream requirements, as noted below).
- Manufacturing Sciences: Aero Engg, Chem Engg, Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Prod/Manuf Engg.
- Fluid and Thermal Sciences: Aero Engg, Chem Engg.
- Solid Mechanics and Design: Aero Engg, Civil Engg, Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Chem Engg.
- Robotics and Automation: Aero Engg, Comp Sc, Elect/Electro/Comm Engg, Mechatronics/Instrum Engg.
