Admissions are made twice a year, in July and December. The minimum qualification for admission to the Ph.D. program is a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University with minimum percentage/CPI specified by the Institute. In exceptional cases, candidates with B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Master's degree in other branches of Engineering and Sciences with minimum percentage/CPI specified by the Institute will be considered. However, outstanding applicants holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering with not less than 75% marks or a CPI of 7.5 may also be considered for admission. For more details please see here. Interview/written test will be conducted by the department and the admissions will be made as per the set of rules laid down by IIT Kanpur.
An applicant must have a master's degree in engineering/technology with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum, or a bachelor's degree in engineering or science (4 year program) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI, or master's degree in science or an allied area, satisfying each of the following criteria:
a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master's degree
first division in bachelor's degree, and
JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE.
However, a valid GATE score is needed for the candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering, if they have not graduated from a CFTI (centrally funded technical institute).
External registration program for PhD A candidate working in an R&D establishment which is equipped with the necessary research and library facilities may be considered for admission only to the PhD programs in engineering. Such a candidate must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least 2 years at the time of admission. The employer must expressly undertake to pay full salary to the candidate and relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete his/her residence requirement. A candidate applying for admission to the external registration program must provide detailed information about the research facilities available at his/her organization and a certificate that these would be available to him/her for carrying out research. He/she should also provide the biodata of the prospective supervisor who would supervise the candidate's work at his/her organization. An application for admission from a candidate working in the approved organization will be considered only if he/she wishes to work in the specified area.
A candidate who is sponsored by his/her employer and who meets the additional conditions specified below may be admitted through a separate selection committee appointed specifically for the purpose. A sponsored candidate must have been in service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years at the time of admission. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to provide full salary to the candidate and to relieve him/her to pursue the program for its full duration. Fulfillment of GATE eligibility requirement may be waived for such candidates. However, the sponsored candidates seeking admission to the M. Tech./ PhD program who have not taken GATE will be called for interview and may in addition be asked to take a written test.
Please note that applicants to the Mechanical Engineering Department need to submit all of the following documents to be considered to the PhD programme. Requirements under item 2 are specific to the ME department and are mandatory. The candidate must upload these documents directly while filing the online application form.

Admission will be through a written test and interview . A candidate is required to attempt Mathematics and Basic English (compulsory for all) and any one of the following four streams (Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, Manufacturing Sciences, Robotics and Automation and Solid Mechanics and Design).
