Kanpur, 05 June 2023: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) celebrated the World Environment Day by organizing a plantation drive followed by a panel discussion and talk on environment issues. More than 60 saplings were planted in the campus, and the activity was initiated by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur, Prof. AR Harish, Dean, R&D, Prof. Ankush Sharma, Professor-In-charge, SIIC and Prof. Ashok Kumar, along with the employees of IIT Kanpur and Army of ex-servicemen from Ganga Task Force.
The activities for the day included a panel discussion on environmental issues and workshop on composting and waste management techniques. Mr. Hari Shankar from Agnys Waste Management presented a talk about the advantages of composting and its effects over environment. It was followed by a panel discussion, “Is plantation enough to save the environment” comprising Dr. Sanjivini Sharma from Kanpur ploggers, Mr. Sarthak Gupta from Novoearth Bioplastics and Prof. Raju K Gupta from IIT Kanpur as panellists, and Prof. Ashok Kumar from Centre from Environmental Sciences and Engineering as moderator. Dr. Sanjivini Sharma emphasized that plastic is a personal problem rather than environmental issue, and mentioned that the microplastics enter the human body through our routine habits even before a child is born, she gave statistical data that microplastics have been found in the breast milk of a mother causing threat to the mankind. Mr. Sarthak Gupta from Novoearth Bioplastics delivered his expertise on recycling such used plastics which have been a part of our daily life now and eliminating its usage slowly and steadily by switching to various alternatives. Prof. Raju K Gupta emphasized that the problem with plastics can change with efforts, and intentions to avoid the use of plastics and switch to reusable alternatives play an important role for the global drive.
