OBITUARY

Prof. H N Mahabala

With sadness the entire IIT Kanpur fraternity offers condolences on the demise of Prof. HN Mahabala on June 27, 2022, at his residence in Bangalore.


Prof. Mahabala, who joined IIT Kanpur in 1965, helping the institute set up it's first computer, the IMB 1620 mainframe, is considered one of the pioneers in developing the Indian Infotech sector, and is fondly remembered by his peers, colleagues and students for his vision, insight and inspiration.


Having been a source of influence for industry pioneers such as Narayan Murthy and Kris Balakrishnan, along with he will always be remembered as the father of computer science education in India.

    A batchmate and I took up careers in computing because of him. We both got zeroes in the first mid semester exam in TA 306. He called us to his room. Said this is the easiest subject and won't take much of your time. You can max the remaining exams and get a B. Plus, he said, computers are the future. (This was 1972)
