Professor Bushra Ateeq, Dean of International Relations
Prof. Bushra Ateeq is a Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering and an occupant of the endowed Joy Gill Chair. She is also a Senior Fellow of the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance.
She obtained her PhD in Genetics from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India in 2003. After having done post-doctoral research at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and Michigan Center for Translational Pathology, University of Michigan, Prof. Ateeq joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in 2013.
Prof. Ateeq is a highly acclaimed researcher in the field of molecular oncology and cancer genomics. She works at the forefront of translational molecular oncology to understand and resolve challenging problems associated with human malignancies. Her research employs novel strategies and approaches to explore the genetic and epigenetic changes that initiate cancer progression and drive resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. She is also involved in screening prostate cancer patients from India for germline/ somatic mutations and is working towards getting a customized “tumor profile gene-signature” panel for diagnostics and precision medicine. To bridge the gap between the bench and the bedside, she is spearheading close collaboration with clinicians, pathologists, and other medical oncologists.
Her accolades are far-reaching, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, National Bioscience Award for Career Development, Sun Pharma Research Award, ICMR-Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize, CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute Award, American Association for Cancer Research-Women in Cancer Research Award, OPPI Scientist Award, Rajib Goyal prize and the Tata Innovation Fellowship. Prof. Ateeq is an elected fellow of all major science academies in India, namely, the National Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India.
