Professor Amalendu Chandra, Dean of Faculty Affairs
Prof. Amalendu Chandra is a Professor at the Department of Chemistry.
He obtained his PhD in 1991 from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. After a postdoc at the University of British Columbia, he joined IIT Kanpur in 1993 as a faculty member.
Prof. Chandra is a renowned theoretical physical chemist. Broad areas of Prof. Chandra’s research include, theoretical and computational studies of molecular liquids, surfaces and interfaces, confined systems, supercooled and supercritical fluids, and also biological systems using classical, quantum and hybrid quantum-classical methods. Apart from looking at the structure and dynamics of these systems, he has also been actively working on theoretical nonlinear spectroscopy of many of these complex systems.
Owing to his contributions to science, Prof. Chandra has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards and honours including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, and also National Academy of Sciences, India. In recognition of his contributions, the Chemical Research Society of India has honored him with the Silver Medal. He has held several other research fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, the Ramanna Fellowship and J. C. Bose National Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology, and recently JSPS Invitational Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
