Structural, Magnetic, Dielectric and Multiferroic Properties of YCrO3 Potential applications of multiferroics such as multi-state memory devices, transducers and sensors have generated interest in this class of materials. One such group is the rare earth orthochromites RCrO3 (R=Y, and rare-earth) exhibiting both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering below a critical temperature. We have synthesized polycrystalline YCrO3 using solid state reaction methods and characterized the samples using XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Raman studies shows anomalies at the magnetic ordering temperature in the line shape parameters. These results can be understood as a consequence of the spin-phonon coupling present below the ordering temperature. We further plan to make thin films using PLD to strain tune and study its influence on the spin-phonon coupling strength in YCrO3.
