Kanpur, 08 March, 2025: In a remarkable show of camaraderie and bonding, the Pioneer Batch (Class of 1965) is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Reunion from March 6-9 at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), reminiscing cherished memories, reconnecting with peers, and celebrating their enduring bond with the institute. The Pioneer Batch has pledged a sum of Rs. 2.5 Crore, raised during the reunion, towards establishing the Pioneering Research & Innovation Award at the institute, marking continuity to their spirit of ‘giving back’ to the alma mater. The award recognizes path-breaking research and innovation at IIT Kanpur, aligning with the institute’s founding vision to promote originality and creative genius. The Pioneer Batch, is witness to the founding years of the institute and attuned to the ethos and spirit shown by the founding Director Dr. P.K. Kelkar. This new addition of the ‘Pioneering Research & Innovation Award’ would honor individuals whose contributions have significantly impacted academia, industry, and society, at large. Inspired by the founding spirit of IIT Kanpur, this annual award recognizes faculty and students whose work demonstrates originality, creative excellence, and tangible impact on industry and society. Instituted as a lasting legacy of the Pioneer Batch, the award aims to inspire future generations to push the boundaries of knowledge and technological advancement. Speaking on the initiative, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, “The pioneering batch of IIT Kanpur, the class of 1965, have made significant contributions to various initiatives at the Institute and continue giving back. The ‘Pioneering Research & Innovation Award’ is built on the Institute’s founding legacy and would inspire generations of researchers, scholars, and innovators. On behalf of the Institute, I extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to the Class of 1965.” Prof. Amey Karkare, Dean of Resources and Alumni at IIT Kanpur said, “The Diamond Jubilee of Class of 1965 marks a truly special milestone. With many of them having entered their ninth decade of life, this reunion holds deep significance as an opportunity to leave a lasting impact. By establishing this award, they have chosen to strengthen IIT Kanpur’s research ecosystem and inspire future generations. Their generosity and vision set an inspiring example of alumni engagement, and we are truly grateful for their invaluable contribution to the institute.” This initiative builds upon the batch’s strong long-standing tradition of supporting IIT Kanpur, with notable past contributions including the establishment of the Pioneer Batch Continuing Education Center (PBCEC) (in 2000) and two endowments for the Opportunity School (2010, 2015), which support education for underprivileged children around the campus. Mr. Abhay Bhushan, alumni batch coordinator, said, “IIT Kanpur has played a defining role in our lives, and this award is our way of giving back to the institute that shaped us.
