6th & 7th November
With an aim to facilitate breakthroughs in biomedical engineering innovations, IIT Kanpur has set up the Mehta Family Center for Engineering in Medicine with the generous support of Mr. Rahul Mehta of the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family foundation (MFF). The center was inaugurated on 6th November 2023 with a two-day inaugural research symposium. The research symposium had exhilarating talks by global stalwarts in the three focus areas of research at MFCEM, namely, Molecular Medicine, Regenerative Medicine and Digital Medicine. Day 1 of symposium commenced with a keynote address by Dr. Gang Bao, the Chair of Bioengineering at Rice University, on nanomedicine and genome editing based approaches for disease therapies, followed by Aurobindo Nath Bose Entrepreneurship Lecture on Molecular Medicine in Oncology practice by talk by R. Venkat of Karkinos Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., a technology-led oncology platform.
Keeping in mind the overwhelming growth in the space of digital medicine, a session showcasing the spectrum of research areas within this domain was conducted on day 2 of the symposium. Dr. Shankar Subramaniam, UCSD delivered the keynote address on application of digital medicine in decoding how the brain gets reprogrammed under diseased conditions such as Alzheimer’s. In the same session Dr. Priyanka Bagade, IIT Kanpur introduced the audience to the expanding world of IoT for Healthcare.
The session on regenerative medicine had Dr. Shamik Sen from IIT Bombay deliver the keynote address on understanding and engineering of stem cell niches and its regulation by the physical microenvironment. Dr. Jayandharan Rao, IIT Kanpur talked about Indigenous Gene Therapy Technologies and the journey from concept to clinical translation.
The symposium also provided a platform for students to show case their research work across the three focus areas via lightning talks, posters and interactive session with the distinguished speakers.
