The PhD program is aimed at assisting the students acquire proficiency in their chosen area through course work, followed by doctoral research. A student admitted to the program is associated with one of the six specializations. These include:
Four groups:
- Aerodynamics
- Flight Mechanics and Control
- Propulsion
- Structures, Structural Dynamics & Aeroelasticity
And two interdisciplinary specializations (IDS):
- Aero-Thermodynamics and Thermal Sciences
- Computational Mechanics
The details of the areas encompassed by each group and IDS can be found in “Research Areas”.
A PhD student is required to complete a minimum of 4 courses and 72 units (two semester load) of research. A student is also required to pass the PhD comprehensive examination and the State Of The Art (SOTA) seminar, after the course work is completed.
Eligibility
Candidates with B.E./B.Tech. degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical, Mechanical, Automobile, Production, Civil, Chemical, Naval Architecture, Electrical, Electronics / Electronics and Communication, Metallurgy / Metallurgy & Material Science, Instrumentation, Mechatronics; four year BS degree in Physics, Mathematics or MSc degree in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering Physics with valid GATE score can apply to the program. The requirement of GATE score may be relaxed for certain cases.
Candidates with M.Tech. or MS(Research) degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical, Mechanical, Automobile, Production, Civil, Chemical, Naval Architecture, Electrical, Electronics / Electronics and Communication, Metallurgy / Metallurgy & Material Science, Instrumentation, Mechatronics; can apply to the program.
Please check the institute website (https://iitk.ac.in) for the announcement for admissions and eligibility.
Admissions
Announcements for admission to the PhD program are made twice a year typically around April or May and October or November. Please check the institute website (https://iitk.ac.in) for the announcement and details of the admission procedure.
The typical department specific procedures for admission to the PhD program are as follows:
Non-sponsored, external and part-time candidates are required to appear in a written test based on mathematics. The shortlisted candidates are then called for a panel interview in their choice of specialization out of the 4 groups and 3 IDSs.
Sponsored (By Industry / Govt. Labs) candidates may be asked to appear for a short written test in mathematics before the interview.
Other details of the procedure are shared with the applicants over email or announced on our website after the advertisement for admissions is made.
Refer to https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pg-manual for more details about the rules and regulations.
Conversion of Program from M.Tech./MS(R) to Ph.D.
Refer to the criteria given below item 4.6 in PG Manual (https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pg-manual).
Additionally the following criteria must be satisfied by the student at the time of application (Faculty meeting minutes of 6th Jan 2022):
- Complete his/her program course credit requirement, which is 36 for MS(R) and 72 for M.Tech.
- A CPI of 8.5 or above for MS(R) and 8.0 or above for M.Tech.
