BSBE Admissions for Post Graduate Program
The Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) was established in September 2001 with the aim of providing a multidisciplinary research and teaching program in modern biology and bioengineering. Research interests of the department include cell & molecular biology, genetics & developmental biology, structural biology, computational biology, neuroscience, molecular oncology, bioremediation, tissue engineering and bioprocess engineering. The department has developed extensive research facility and infrastructure to support the teaching and research activities. Our goals are to excel in human resource development with comprehensive development of students in all areas of academic activities - curricular, extra-curricular, and research.
Our students form a diverse lot with backgrounds in various domains of biology as well as other disciplines. We accept applications from students who do not have formal training in biology but are interested in working on biological problems, including students from mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, medicine, and all branches of engineering.
PhD in BSBE
PhD program in BSBE is intended for students interested in carrying out distinguished scholarly activities. Excellence in research apart, the program envisages comprehensive development of students for leadership in science and engineering in both industry and academia. Therefore, the PhD program involves intense course work covering diverse areas of biology and bioengineering for competence in both in analytical and quantitative skills

M. Tech in BSBE (4 Semesters)
Master of Technology (M. Tech) program in BSBE meets a variety of career objectives in research and industry. The program is also supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India. The program is for four semesters of which the last two semesters involve hands-on training and research. Midway through the program, students may apply for switch-over to the PhD program of BSBE. The program is designed for students from both biology and non-biology background.
Who can apply?
Candidates who have a Master's degree in any area of science (mathematics, physics, chemistry or life sciences) or Bachelor's degree in Technology/Engineering (B.Tech. /B.E.) in any branch, Medicine (MBBS), Pharmaceutical (B. Pharm), Agricultural or Veterinary Sciences are eligible to apply. Applicants should have secured a minimum CPI of 6.6 (or 60 percent marks) in their qualifying degree (and should be at least seven percent higher than the minimum pass marks/CPI) and should have a valid GATE score. The requirement of a GATE score is waived for M.B.B.S. degree holders and for engineering graduates from IITs with an overall CGPA of 6.5 and a CGPA of 8.0 during the last two semesters. Candidates appearing in the final examinations of the qualifying degree are also eligible to apply
Financial Assistance
Students in M. Tech program of BSBE receive financial assistance from the Institute or from the DBT (New Delhi) @ Rs 8000/- per month.
Selection Procedure
For both M. Tech and PhD programs, short-listed applicants are called for a written and oral test, generally during the month of May (application details become available a couple of months in advance on the website). The screening tests are designed to evaluate the candidate's analytical skills and the understanding of the basic concepts of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The academic session starts in the month of July for summer admissions and in January for winter admissions.
