Shyama Narendranath (URSC/ISRO)
The Indian space program has taken significant strides in the last decade with missions such as the Chandrayaan series, Mars Orbiter, AstroSat and XPoSat. The Human Space Flight / Gaganyaan programs are also converging rapidly. Additionally, there are many missions in the study phase where there is a high thrust on science. Need of the hour is a systematic effort to facilitate design and development of space science instruments and for capacity building across the country. The Space Instrumentation and Payload Development (SIPD) workshop is being held at IIT Kanpur to initiate such an effort with the aid of ISRO. This workshop is bringing together experts from science and instrumentation backgrounds to share the know-how and chart a strategy towards development of space instrumentation. The focus is on Instrumentation and payload development from the perspectives of astronomical observations, planetary in-situ and ex-situ measurements and astrobiology, which have a large scope for the Indian space programme. Experts will thus be discussing technology development and collaborations for developing high-quality payloads on future astronomical and planetary missions.
The SIPD workshop is being inaugurated by Anil Bhardwaj (Director, Physical Research Laboratory) with a Lecture on “Indian Planetary and Space Missions: Challenges, Science, and Future”. On each of the following three days of the workshop a unique theme will be covered:1)Space Instrumentation and Manufacturing: Current & Emerging Technologies 2) Missions, Payloads, Data and Science 3) New Frontiers and Future Directions.
For each theme there will be a couple of topical overview presentations, a few instrument development and “lessons learned” presentations, which will be followed by focused discussion/brainstorming sessions. Additionally, some special presentations are planned to serve as introductory training for scientists and engineers who are new to space instrumentation and payload development.
